The aim of this HRZZ research project is to study effects of the swift heavy ion irradiation in amorphous materials. Impact of this type of ion often leads to nanoscale damage called an ion track. On the material surface, ion tracks can be observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), while in the bulk these nanoscale objects can be investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are powerful computational tool that helps researchers understand processes leading to the formation of the ion track.
